New WSIT Plug-in coming

Filed under: webservices — arungupta @ 12:00 am

What does GlassFish v2 + NetBeans 5.5.1 IDE + WSIT plug-in give you ?

If you read my blog, then you know the answer. If not, then this is a recipe to create Interoperable (with Microsoft .NET 3.0 framework), Secure, Reliable, and Transactional Web services easily in an intuitive manner.

If you use NetBeans Update Center to install the WSIT plug-in, then the version released with WSIT Milestone 2 will be installed. The plug-in has been updated since then (see below on how to install the updated plug-in) for the reasons given below.

  • The plug-in is now a module suite consisting of two NetBeans modules (.nbm files), "Web Services Interoperability Technology Support" (WSIT Support) and "Web Services Interoperability Technology WSDL Extensions" (WSIT WSDL Extensions). The WSIT Support  module relies upon the WSIT WSDL Extensions module and allows a cleaner separation between the view (UI) and the model (WSDL). On the NetBeans Update Center (when they are available), these modules will be available as one download option keeping it simple for you.
  • Splitting the module into two allows modularization and only the required module to be loaded.
  • The WSIT configuration (reached by clicking "Edit Web Service Attributes") is now more intuitive and extensible. Instead of splitting into two separate tabs (Messaging and Security), all the WSIT feature can be configured on one tab. This makes configuring multiple attributes such as security and reliability easy for and endpoint.

How to install the plug-in ?

  1. If a WSIT plugin is already installed, it is recommended to uninstall it. Go to Tools, Modules Manager menu and select the "Web Services Interoperability Technology Support" module and click on Uninstall. You may have to Sort the module names by Name to view the module.
  2. Download the updated modules.
  3. Click on Tools, Update Center menu and choose the "Install Manually Downloaded Modules (.nbm files) ". Follow rest of the process from here. The selected modules will look like this.
  4. Once installed, the modules will appear in Tools, Module Manager window as shown here

These new modules will replace the existing WSIT module when the the next WSIT milestone is released.

Gadget loaded toilet from Roto Rooter

Filed under: General — arungupta @ 11:05 am

Want to win HDTV, iPod with dock, TiVo, Xbox 360, DVD player, Laptop, Bullhorn, Bike pedals, Beer tap and Refrigerator – all together ?

But before you decide, you need to understand that you will not be able to put these fancy gadgets in your family room. Instead all of these are going to come pre-installed on the latest toilet from Roto Rooter. It seems you can win this ultra-techie toilet on a contest starting on Roto’s website starting on 24th of this month. And of course it has a button for emergency calls to Roto Rooter.

NetBeans Version for WSIT in GlassFish

Filed under: webservices — arungupta @ 9:29 pm

The NetBeans 5.5 IDE is tested with Sun Java System Application Server PE 9.0 Update Release 1 or GlassFish v1. It also used to work with GlassFish v2 but stopped doing so after b26 because of issue 90221 in NetBeans. A patch has been applied to NetBeans 5.5.1 which can be downloaded from here (select 5.5.1 from the "NetBeans Version" list box).

I downloaded NetBeans 5.5.1 dev build, installed NetBeans WSIT plug-in available from the Update Center, and registered GlassFish b31 instance following first part of the Flash demo. Then I built a Reliable Web Service and invoked it using the second part of the demo. Note that to install the WSIT plug-in from NetBeans Update Center, "NetBeans Update Center Beta" checkbox has to be explicitly selected as it is not the default option.

Look for the window title in the screen shots below which indicates NetBeans 5.5.1 dev build dated Jan 11th. And the GlassFish v2 b31 was promoted this morning as well.

Fig 1: WSIT Plug-in installed in NetBeans 5.5.1 dev build

Fig 2: GlassFish v2 b31 configured in NetBeans 5.5.1 dev build

Fig 3: Reliable Endpoint Deployed in NetBeans 5.5.1 dev build

Fig 4: Reliable Client invoked from NetBeans 5.5.1 dev build

Look at the last TerminateSequence SOAP message in the output log window terminating the reliable sequence.

In short, if you want to use build a .NET 3.0 interoperable reliable secure Web service, use NetBeans 5.5.1 dev build, GlassFish v2 b31 and NetBeans WSIT plug-in (from Update Center) and follow the two part (part 1 and part 2) interactive demo .

Five things you don’t know about me

Filed under: General — arungupta @ 9:00 am

I’m 28th generation, in less than a month, of "Five things you don’t know about me" meme started by Jeff Pulver on Dec 10, 2006. My hierarchy starts from Andi Egloff (27), Mark White (26), Kevin Schmidt (25), Rich Sharples (24), Max Mortazavi (23), Roberto Chinnici (22), Marc Hadley (21), Gerry Buechelt (20), Pat Patterson (19), Eve Maler (18), Tim Bray (17, getting into Sun now), Ugo Cei (16), Gianugo (15), Yoav Shapiro (14), Jim Jagielski (13), Sam Ruby (12, Jim Winstead Jr (11), Dave (10), Green LA Girl (9), Ivan Environman (8), Tara Hunt (7), (tagged twice) Stowe Boyd (6) and Jesse (6). Following the first link, Irwin Lazar (5), The Phone Boy (4) tagged thrice by Ken Camp (3), Peter Csathy (3), and Luca Filigheddu (3). Again following the first link Andy Abramson (2) and finally the root Jeff Pulver (2). Here are my five things:

  1. During Masters, Sun and Microsoft were my two dream companies. I’ve been working at Sun for close to 8 yrs and work very closely with Microsoft to enable Web services interoperability between Java and .NET 3.0 using Web Services Interoperability Technology (WSIT).
  2. My first assignment after coming to United States was helping my brother paint his house which is where we spent our next 3 best years of life.
  3. I’m afraid of dogs. I’ve had dogs chase me multiple times during training runs which has made me change my course multiple times. Once I reached home much earlier than the regular time I take for running and everybody at home had a good laugh about the reason. It was of course, a dog chasing me and then I didn’t stop sprinting all the way to home.
  4. There are certain entrees that only I cook in the house. My family (including my wife :) and friends like it exactly that way. I love cooking and I realized I share this passion with Jonathan Schwartz.
  5. Me and my wife’s birthday and our anniversary are all within 3 weeks (coming really soon). We celebrate one event where we call all the friends and other two are just with the family. A milestone event makes it an easier choice but other years (like this year) it’s fun crafting the algorithm to identify the event to celebrate.

Passing the baton: Kohsuke Kawaguchi, Rajiv Mordani, Vivek Pandey, Carla Mott, Geertjan Wielenga

Update: Geertjan has already been tagged so now I tag Greg Murray.

First skiing over the weekend

Filed under: Sports — arungupta @ 9:00 am

After getting postponed for past 3 weeks, we finally made our first skiing trip of the winter season to Boreal over the weekend. And the best part was that my son (4 yrs old) enjoyed his first encounter with the skis at their Kids Club. Riding up in elevators and going down on the slides are two of his favorite games and he could easily connect with ski lift and downhill skiing with them very well. Most of the lifts, Accelerator, Claimjumper, 49er, and Solaris were open. However Cedar Ridge was closed which is the route I’ve always enjoyed.

If you are a regular Boreal person, it’s definitely worth signing up for iRIDE card as that gives you "Buy 2 – Get 1" deal for lift tickets which I’ve found better than any other discounts available for Boreal.

Check out the flickr stream.

Harbin Ice and Snow Festival Opens

Filed under: General — arungupta @ 8:22 am

The annual Ice and Snow Festival has opened in the North Eastern Chinese city of Harbin. The temperature in Harbin goes forty below zero, both Fahrenheit and Centigrade, during winter and stays below freezing most of the winter. Instead of suffering the cold, residents of Harbin put up a great annual festival of ice and snow sculptures and competitions. The show official runs from January 5 – Feb 5, 2007. Without giving more details, dig into the following links to see some beautiful pictures:

It’s surprising that festival does not have it’s own home page.
