Back from vacation

Filed under: General — arungupta @ 8:24 am

This blog has been silent for past few weeks as I was on vacation in India (flickr stream). I came back over the weekend and found my home machine and car battery to be down. The car battery could be easily jump started but the home machine gave the following message:

...
multi(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\agp440.sys
A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any Windows updates you might need.
If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

Microsoft KB article # 297185 reports the cause as damaged file system. I hope to recover the file system by using the XP installation CDs otherwise will have to extract the data from the internal hard disk since it contains my digital photographs taken over last 4 yrs. I’ve been taking regular backups on CD but I might loose 2 months of photos if the data cannot be recovered. To be double safe, I bought a Maxtor 320 GB external USB 2.0 hard drive this morning from Best Buy (which was offering a $70 discount on the regular price of $200). This made taking photo backups much easier than on CDs. I highly recommend using an external USB hard drive for taking photo backups (may be folks already are and I’m running behind)

BTW, my camera also died (Canon S45) during the trip so I’ll be shopping for a new camera as well. Feel free to recommend any in compact digital with at least 6 mega pixels and a relatively fast boot time. Canon Powershot A710 IS and Nikon Coolpix S10 are two options to begin and am willing to hear opinions and suggestions.
